HISTORY OF HORROR

The roots of filmed horror were an extension of a genre of literature that got its start in the late 1700s: Gothic literatureThe term 'horror' did not come into use for film until the 1930s, however, the following film, ."The Hunted Castle." (Melieres, 1896) shares many elements we associate with the genre.

COVENTIONS OF HORROR GENRE

The camera angles used tend be unusual wish brings an unsettling feeling among the audience. Moreover, the scenes are normally underexposed, dimly lit or completely dark, successfully establishing a sense of eeriness for the viewers. The sound is either faint or extremely loud, it builds suspense and jerks the audience in jumpscares.

  • Low angles.
  • Tilted angle. 
  • Close up. 
  • Tracking or panning shot.
  • Reverse. 
  • Birds eye/high angle.
